I admit that Home Alone is one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time. Most parents wouldn't even think about leaving their young children home alone to fend for themselves.

Then I began to wonder if there were any state laws or guidelines regarding specific age ranges when it's appropriate to let kids stay home alone. The website imom.com listed the states with these kinds of rules in place.

The imom.com article lists the minimum age at which children may be left at home alone, categorized by states. Connecticut is just one of 34 states that do not have a law in place but, most of the 34 states have guidelines.

My opinion is that the age at which it's safe and appropriate to leave your child alone should be decided by the parents, taking into account the maturity of the child. But that's just me.

The Connecticut Department of Children and Families website includes "Guidelines for Leaving Your Child Alone," and what do you think they recommend? Exactly what I said!

Deciding when your child is ready to stay home alone is a difficult decision for parents.  There is no set age, either prescribed by law or by child development experts.  It comes down to a judgment call on the part of parents.

Check this out! The great state of Kansas recommends that six-year-olds can be left alone for short periods while Oklahoma recommends grade school children over six years old "who demonstrate the ability to be responsible and mature may be left alone one or two hours during the day."
