A Patterson woman trying to pass a tractor-trailer collided head-on with a car driving in the opposite direction, killing the other driver.

On Monday around 6:30 a.m. on Route 22, near the intersection of Thunder Ridge Road in Patterson, a 2005 Jeep Liberty collided head-on with car driving in another direction.

The driver of the Jeep, 47-year-old Damiana Mackoon of Patterson was trying to pass a southbound tractor-trailer in a passing zone. She was unable to complete the move and crashed into a car heading in the opposition direction, police say.

The driver of the other car, 56-year-old Louis Arpi of Ossining was pronounced dead on the scene, from injuries he sustained in the crash.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Mackoon only suffered minor injuries. She was taken to a hospital, treated and released.

At this time no charges have been filed, but the crash remains under investigation. The crash closed Route 22 to traffic for about three hours.
