We have a pretty big cycling community in the greater Danbury area. As the weather warms up, we see more and more cyclists on the road, and it’s important to be aware that the roadways are shared.

Unfortunately, there are dangers when riding next to cars, and fatalities do happen. I remember when a cyclist was killed by Old Hawleyville Road in Bethel, a road I pass by every day. It's very sad, and these are avoidable tragedies.

Cyclists in the area are going to be honoring those cyclists killed while riding. According to The Brookfield Patch, thousands will cycle nationwide in a silent funeral procession to remember other cyclists killed on the road.  It’s called the North America Ride of Silence and it will happen this Wednesday, May 18.

This ride was started in 2003, and has grown quite a bit since then. It’s now in 30 countries worldwide.

The ride in greater Danbury will start at Rogers Park, in front of Rogers Park Middle School and will ride into downtown Bethel. Helmets are mandatory and they recommend using lights. You would have to be at Rogers Park by 6:45 p.m. because the 5 mile ride starts at 7 p.m.

For information and updates, you can check the Bicycle Advocacy of Greater Danbury’s Facebook page, and for more information on the history of the rid, check out Ride of Silence.
