Glider Crashes Through Roof Of Danbury Home Tuesday Evening

A glider reportedly ran out of power and crashed through the roof of a Danbury home on Golden Hill Avenue early Tuesday evening. Police and Fire crews responded to a 911 call shortly before 6 pm.

That particular glider operates on battery power, according to Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, who told newstimes.com that "the pilot thought he had 20 minutes of battery life left during his approach to Danbury Airport when he ran out of power."

No one was seriously injured in the crash, but the pilot and all three occupants of the home, a mother and her two daughters, were looked at by EMS and then taken to Danbury Hospital for further evaluation. The mother, Amanda Vinicio Oliveira said she was okay, but her daughters were shaken up. “(There is) a lot of trauma with the children and they are concerned about where we are going to live.”

Mayor Boughton, who was on the scene shortly after the crash, identified the pilot as a Danbury businessman, but would not reveal his name, however he did say "he's pretty banged up, but is expected to be O.K."

Boughton also said that "the attic of the house took the brunt of the crash, and when neighbors went into the attic shortly after the plane came down, they found the pilot walking around looking for his glasses. It’s not catastrophic, they have work to do. The big thing though is no one was hurt.”

Crews are expected to be on the scene well into the night waiting for a crane to arrive to remove the plane.
