I drove through downtown Waterbury last night and as I went passed St. Mary's Hospital on Scovill Street, I noticed a very famous name on the street sign above me.

Dylan McDermott Boulevard is basically Cole Street, it's located right next to the Hospital. Yes, it's that Dylan McDermott, the American movie and television actor. You may know him from his appearances in American Horror Story, The Practice, Hamburger Hill, Steel Magnolias, Law & Order, and numerous other acting credits. But did you know that he's a Holy Cross High School/St. Mary's graduate?

I graduated from Holy Cross in 1987, I went to school with a couple of Dylan's cousins, but I never got to meet him. His career didn't take off until after I graduated, so there were no cool stories about the seedy underside of Hollywood being bandied about on Oronoke Road.

Why is there a Dylan McDermott Boulevard in Waterbury? He was inducted into the Silas Bronson Library/Waterbury Hall of Fame in 2013.

According to his induction biography, McDermott graduated from St. Mary's School in 1975 and Holy Cross in 1979. In 2011, he established a scholarship at Holy Cross for students interested in the visual or performing arts. Hopefully he's still sending some cash to the school 10 years later.

There really isn't much to look at along Dylan McDermott Boulevard in Waterbury. On one side of the road is the St. Mary's Hospital parking garage and on the other side of the street, it's rehab facilities, a parking lot and the permanently closed Palace Bar & Grill.

Pretty cool though, right? I guess I never noticed the street sign before because I'm a Waterbury Hospital guy, but it's a cool little bit of Brass City history for you for the next time you're watching American Horror Story, or Steel Magnolias for the 50th time.
