A decades long tradition in Danbury has shuttered its doors.

My dad loved going to the U.S. Military Museum in Danbury. He used to say it made him feel settled, in a way, to see some of the artifacts that were housed there.

The website usmilitarymuseum.org has a note on the home page simply stating that the U.S. Military Museum will be closed until further notice.

In a story from newtimes.com the museum has closed after over two decades in Danbury and the collection of 10,000 artifacts is headed to the Museum of American Armor in Old Bethpage, Long Island.

Al Barto, secretary of the U.S. Military Museum told the News Times:

From its first day to its last, this museum has been about paying tribute to the American G.I. and our defense of freedom. This is a difficult decision for us, but it was made with considerable care to ensure that the legacy of the U.S. Military Museum lives on by gifting our assets to the Museum of American Armor on Long Island

We lived not far from the museums location on Park Avenue, so my father had the chance to wander around, or even just drive by for a peak, whenever he wanted. There are some great pictures in this recent piece.

Whatever the cause of this closure was, it makes me sad. My dad passed away many years ago, but anytime I drove by the museum it made me think of him, his service to our country, and all those who the museum honored as well.
