Matthew Czajka did a lot of things in his 101 years on this earth. There are so many things to celebrate about him that I hardly know where to start.

Not only was he born in Danbury, CT. He was actually a hatter! You can't get more "Danbury" than that! According to his obituary published on Legacy.com, he was a man with a great sense of humor and someone who was known for keeping his cool even in tense situations. You would never think that Matthew Czajka grew up during this country’s Great Depression.

After graduating from St. Peter’s and Danbury High School, he worked as a hatter in Danbury until he joined the Army and served our country in World War II from 1943 until 1945. Matt landed on Omaha Beach on June 9, 1944 and he fought from Normandy to Berlin, as a result he was awarded five battle stars on his ribbon.

When he returned to the United States, he married his beloved wife, Winifred. They spent more than half a century together in Florida until she passed away in 2000. Ten years after her death, Matthew decided to move back to Danbury to be closer to his family. He lived at The Gardens Assisted Living Facility on Glen Hill Road.

Matthew Czajka passed away on February 20, 2018 but he will forever be a Danbury resident. He was laid to rest in St. Peter’s Cemetery on Main Street, right next to Winifred, his wife of 54 years.
