A police officer called in a report of a white powdery substance found at the courthouse at 146 White Street, causing the building to immediately be evacuated. State Police and Fire officials were also on the scene.
According to newstimes.com, the city’s hazardous materials team was called to the scene as courthouse workers we leaving the building. State Police and Fire officials were also called to the scene.
Mayor Mark Boughton took to Facebook and said the substance is being tested by the hazardous materials team, and said he was going to speak with Police Chief Patrick Ridenhour about the incident. Boughton also posted that officials are testing the substance to determine what it is.
We talked to Steve Baltrush, a state employee at the courthouse who said "apparently an envelope containing some white powder was found and everyone was evacuated and sent across the street to the student center at WestConn's mid town campus. While we were leaving the building Hazmat crews and Fire crews were arriving on the scene. It was like being in school when the fire drill alarm goes off."
Steve also said that as of 11:45 AM people were being allowed to re-enter the building.
Law enforcement officials and health department investigators were also on the scene.
This is currently an on going investigation, and more details on what actually occurred will be updated as information becomes available.
