This was an actual study based on personality traits from 48 states.

The author of the study is Ryan H. Murphy, who is a Senior Research Fellow at Southern Methodist University and before everyone gets all bent out of shape keep in mind the study is all about psychopathy and not psychopaths according to an article in the Connecticut Post.

Psychopathy is defined through personality traits. Murphy describes psychopathy as three character traits: Boldness, meanness, and disinhibition, which is defined as "lack of restraint manifested in disregard of social norms."

For instance, the Midwest and South were found to be "easygoing and conventional." The Southwest and Pacific Northwest tended to be "composed and creative" and the Northeast and Texas were described as "headstrong and uninhibited."

Murphy's general conclusion is that most of the states in the Northeast were the most psychopathic. It may not be surprising to find that Washington D.C. is at the top of the heap when it comes to psychopathy because of the concentration of professions like CEO, lawyer, media, salesperson, surgeon, journalist, and politician.

The least psychopathic jobs included care aid, nurse, therapist, and craftsperson. He concluded that the purpose of his study was to gain an understanding of the psychology of different regions across the United States. The top five most psychopathic states according to Murphy's study are as follows:

  1. Washington D.C.
  2. Maine
  3. Connecticut
  4. New York (no kidding!)
  5. Maryland
