Connecticut Police Warn of New Scam Involving EZ Pass
Okay, here’s the thing—whether I want to admit it or not, I'm getting old. I remember the days when toll booths were a part of the driving experience. You’d roll up, hand over cash, and off you went.

Simple, real, and satisfying. Now? It’s all about E-ZPass and magic. You just cruise through, and a bill shows up in the mail weeks later. No more handing over actual money; it feels like I’m just swiping a credit card in some invisible, digital world where the toll is just… a number on a screen. But apparently, we’ve got bigger problems than my dinosaur tendencies.
According to Officer Christian Bruckhart via WTNH News, Connecticut police are warning people about a new scam targeting E-ZPass users. Apparently, you might get a text saying you have unpaid tolls, followed by a sneaky link urging you to pay up. Now, let’s be real for a second Connecticut doesn’t have tolls (for now, at least), but if you’re like me, you probably have an E-ZPass from those trips to New York, Boston, or wherever else out of state. That’s when these scammers get you.
Bruckhart explains that this is just the latest scam in a long line of shady activities. Some people News 8 spoke to mention all kinds of scams, like telephone scams and one about downloading a barcode.
So, what can you do to avoid getting caught up in this nonsense? Well, first of all, don’t respond to random emails or texts that say you owe money. Police officials point out that tolling authorities won’t ask for payment through text. They’ll send you a bill in the mail and let you take action on your own time. Seems pretty straightforward, right?
Here’s a piece of advice for all of us: just don’t answer the phone, don’t click on any suspicious links, and definitely don’t engage with those scammy messages. It’s the only way to keep your hard-earned cash safe.
And hey, if you see a toll booth in the wild, maybe take a moment to appreciate it. That thing is a relic, a piece of history. It’s the last bit of "real" money you’ll see before it’s all digital, and you’ll just be getting E-ZPass bills in the mail.
