Connecticut Needs Better Representatives on the Starbucks Mugs
My wife likes to collect Starbucks coffee mugs, we have a couple dozen in our cabinet from all over the United States. Starbucks creates different mugs for the cities and states where they operate, and some have become valuable. We don't own a Starbucks 'Connecticut' mug, they're lame.
This is the question that has stumped the marketing geniuses of Connecticut: What, or who, is our identity? Most recently our college basketball teams have taken over the spotlight, but you won't find one on the latest Starbucks Discovery Series - Connecticut mug. Jim Calhoun, Danny Hurley, and Gino Auriemma are not on this mug, it instead features orange oysters, nutmeg, a lobster roll, sports broadcasters, a clock, and someone tossing a Frisbee. I do appreciate the nods to ESPN, Seth Thomas, and Connecticut's contribution to outdoor family activities, but leaving off pizza and basketball?
The other Connecticut Starbucks mug is a few years old, it's from Starbucks Been There series, and it also features nutmeg, the state capital building, a covered bridge, and a lollipop. This one also differs from the 2024 mug with depictions of the Connecticut River, Long Island Sound, a whale tail, lighthouse, and a cheeseburger.
Have you tasted nutmeg? Jumped into the Connecticut River, or stood underneath a white oak? Congratulations, you have experienced Connecticut, according to Starbucks.
They're probably deep into designing the 2025 Connecticut mug at Starbucks corporate, what else was invented here, or we do better than anywhere else in the world?
