Connecticut Drivers Are Calling Out Left-Lane Cruisers—And They’re Not Wrong
Left-lane campers seem to grow on trees in Connecticut—and it’s time they were stopped.

Every year, I tell myself, this is it. This is the year they’ll finally save that last $2,500, pack up the car, and head to Florida. But alas, reality never quite matches my imagination. I'm clearly not the only one fed up with these folks—a recent Reddit post from Connecticut stirred up an avalanche of s---.
The post came from u/National-Area5471 who said:
Cruising in the left lane of the highway
As I was driving home today on the highway I was thinking to myself what is wrong with people doing 60 miles an hour in the left lane and not moving over? Mildly infuriating is an understatement as it causes traffic jams unnecessarily. Then I come home and on the news on channel 3 there's a segment about people camping out in the left lane, not moving over, how it's illegal to pass on the right (which I did not know and do all the time to pass these slow pokes). Has this gotten worse or is it just me? I'm assuming since it's on the news it's much worse. And yes, it's out of state as well as Connecticut drivers.
Here were some of the best responses:
Constant_Affect7774: This is probably one of the most discussed topics on r/CT.
BeerLovingBobbaFett: It’s gotten much worse with the lane campers. There’s always some douche that gets on the highway barely doing 50 in a rush to get to left lane to do the speed limit and cause congestion.
slipknottin: I hate having people pass me on the right because of how difficult it is to see that blind spot (especially when they are driving much faster than you are). So I try to not pass people on the right as much as I can. But what other options are there? High beaming them or tailgating? Not good options. Though I do sometimes get a chuckle out of the left lane campers who sit there at 55 mph then all of a sudden swerve across three lanes to take their exit.
jacobsever: Tbf I do not view flashing brights as a “polite” gesture. I’ve lived all over the US and have never had anyone flash their brights at me from behind to “politely” signal me to move over. The first time it happened to me after moving to CT pissed me off royally. Still does. If I’m in the left lane (passing lane) and I’m ACTIVELY PASSING people in the right lane…shut the f--- up and chill. Me going 70mph in a 55mph zone is plenty fast to pass someone going 60mph. If you want to go faster, that’s fine…but chill out and wait. As soon as I pass the person in the TRAVEL LANE, I’m going to signal and move to the right and let you by.
Separate_Sea8717: Extremely bad and selfish drivers. The thought of them being wrong would never cross their minds. Sad culture here in the US due to extreme individualism.
jbourne0129: Not a new issue, but a huge issue. I frequently end up passing on the right which is more dangerous, and I hate it. But people get so entitled and think they are totally in the right to go slow in the left lane. It's so bad that I want to come up with a gesture to thank the people who move when I flash my lights, because it's so rare for people to actually pay attention.
The real question is: how do we change this? If you want Connecticut lawmakers to take action, you have to frame it as a safety issue. That’s the angle that gets their attention—gives them a chance to step in and look like they care about the people they represent. And honestly, it is a safety issue. Drivers will do whatever it takes to get around these left-lane squatters. “Whatever it takes” often means flying down the right lane—or even the shoulder—at 90 mph. Why? Because some folks think they can control the flow of traffic by cruising in the passing lane like they’re everyone’s grandpa.
