Connecticut, It’s Almost Time to Take Your Bird Feeders Inside

Spring is the most exciting time of the year for those who enjoy birds, as the Winter chill fades away, our Southern visitors start stopping by. The Connecticut Hummingbird-feeder countdown has begun, but did you know that our state has suggested that you take your typical bird feeders down during the warmer months?

We had a couple of hints of the warmer weather in Connecticut during the month of march, but as of today, April 1, 2024, it's a brisk 47 degrees in Brookfield. 47 degrees at noontime means it's far too early in the season to put your hummingbird feeders outside. I just had a look at Today's(4-1-24) update on hummingbirdcentral.com, and it appears that the Northern reach of the 2024 hummingbird migration is currently close to the North Carolina/Virginia state line. There have been a few recent sightings inland, away from the coast, near the Washington D.C. area, but it's probably safe to say that we're a couple to three weeks away from any hummingbird to show up North of NYC.

Here's a piece of advice that I've really never heard before, and it comes from the latest update from the State of Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's Wildlife Division - The CT DEEP Wildlife Division advises against feeding birds during the warmer months of the year (Late March - Early December) Why? Feeding birds during the warmer months often leads to conflicts with black bears. Instead? Plant native plants, which in turn will attract lots of  delicious native insects for the hungry birds.
