In order to determine their rankings of state where residents are most self-reliant, WalletHub.com compared each of the 50 states based on five sources of dependency: Consumer finances, the government, job market, international trade, and personal vices. WalletHub.com further evaluated those indicators using 39 key indicators of independence to determine which states were most self-sustaining.

Among the 39 key indicators were median credit scores, share of adults saving for children's college education, median debt per household, poverty rate, share of underwater mortgages, share of households receiving SNAP benefits, subsidized housing units, job growth rate, unemployment rate, share of jobs supported by export goods, and Connecticut's share of drinkers, smokers, and gamblers.

How did Connecticut rank near the Top 10?

Connecticut's overall ranking was #11 out of 50, our financial dependency was ranked at #11, government dependency at #16, job market dependency at #35, international trade dependency at #27, and #3 in vice dependency.
