Connecticut Diner Abandoned for 15 Years May Get a New Lease on Life
For the last 15 years, this diner has sat alone and decaying at 267 Farmington Avenue in the Asylum Hill neighborhood of Hartford. Built-in 1947, Gus and Helen Vlecides ran the Aetna Diner for four decades. Their customers included Eddie Fisher, one of the most popular recording artists in the 1950s, along with Zsa Zsa Gabor and Telly Savalas. The Aetna Diner was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.
According to an article in the Hartford Courant dated October 2022, the diner is included in the Asylum Hill neighborhood, which is rich in culture and history. The Asylum Neighborhood Association is looking forward to receiving a $1.2 million grant to refurbish neighborhood sections, including the Aetna Diner.
