I'm not going to lie. At the age of 70, I've thought about retiring. The problem is, I love my job and can't imagine not driving into the radio station each morning. However, I could do without waking up at 4:30 a.m.

According to an article in the Newstimes provided by realtor.com, you might be surprised at some of the towns that retirees are seriously looking at.

I would never in a million years expect to see Hartford, CT mentioned as one of the fastest-growing retirement towns in the country. With all the complaining from Connecticut residents about how expensive it is to live in this state, I would never expect to see it in the Top 10.

Let's run down the list of Americas 10 Fastest-Growing Retirement Towns.

  1. Lakeland, Florida
  2. Traverse City, Michigan
  3. Springfield, MA
  4. Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
  5. Wilmington, North Carolina
  6. Winchester, Virginia
  7. Portland, Maine
  8. Salisbury, Maryland
  9. Albany, New York
  10. HARTFORD, CT

I can certainly understand why Lakeland, Florida is number one. We've heard it all before; it's warm all year, no snow, and blah, blah, blah. The wife and I love to visit but would never choose to live there.

Of all the cities and towns across the country, why did Hartford make this list? It's all about metrics and money. As the pandemic became a monster through 2020, New York City residents couldn't wait to move out to the gorgeous scenery and country living in Connecticut.

The price of a home or apartment in NYC is outrageous, which means moving to Connecticut is significantly cheaper. It's a fact that buyers can get a home for about a quarter of what they would pay in Manhattan, where the average home price runs $1,375, 050. Yikes!

The city of Hartford has it all - great restaurants, shops, and concert facilities both large and small. You can also go for one of those old-fashioned Sunday drives on any of Connecticut's beautiful country roads. Connecticut's smaller towns define what New England is all about, like Avon, Old Saybrook, Kent, and Salisbury. You are not going to find anything like that in Florida, you say.
