CDC Says Deadly Superbug Found Here in Connecticut and New York
Scientists are warning us to wash our hands, and wash again to help contain these burgeoning superbugs that are here in Connecticut, New York and 25 other states, according to a report published in the New York Daily News.
It’s a threat to people of all ages, as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) say more than 23 million Americans get antibiotic resistant infections per year, and those infections kill approximately 23,000 people annually. Doctors and scientists refer to them as: Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae, or CRE, and in non-professional terms, you might hear them called “nightmare” bacteria.
They're called that because they're more deadly, and more resistant than bacteria found in prior years. These newer antibiotic-resistant genes are being seen in 27 of the 50 United States with more than 200 cases being reported just recently.
In addition to persistent hand washing, keeping cuts clean will also aid keep them at bay. Doctors say if you’ve had any medical treatment out of the country, be sure to alert medical providers as well.
To combat these ‘nightmare bacteria’ strains The New York Daily News says:
Researchers are aggressively striving to get the upper hand on the germs through identification, tracking and containment efforts by setting up an Antibiotic Resistance Laboratory Network across the country.
