Cat Food Recall – Is Your Brand On The List?

I always worry about what I am feeding my cats. I have researched making my own cat food for them but the nutritional supplements essential for cats make it very costly and time consuming. We place our trust in the companies that make pet foods that they will provide the best we can give them. Since cats can be quite finicky with their food preferences, it does not make for an easy job. We all know that what they like today they will turn their noses up at tomorrow but next week, it might be exactly what they want.

My cat, Oliver, was diagnosed with diabetes last month. Since then, I have been on a quest to get him healthy. I have spent so much time researching pet foods and reading cat food labels (which is not easy if your eyes are over 40) trying to find the best food possible to get him healthy. He is currently in remission, which may not last long due to the nature of feline diabetes, but it is so obvious that what goes into his body is making a difference in his health.

Being so hyper aware of what I am feeding my cats makes me want to share this information with you. The FDA has issued an alert announcing a voluntary recall of certain kinds of cat foods made by the J.M. Smucker Company which was discovered at the manufacturing facility. Although there have been no reported illnesses,14 kinds of 9Lives food, EvertPet Mixed Grill Dinner and five kinds of Special Kitty food distributed from December 20, 2016 to January 3, 2017. These food are being recalled for possible low levels of thiamine.

Thiamine deficiency can cause gastrointestinal or neurological problems in cats.

If you have any cans of cat food from these lots, do not feed them to your cat and call the J.M. Smucker company at 1-800-828-9980 Monday through Friday 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM EST or contact consumer.relations@jmsmucker.com.
