With the Coronavirus ramping up, will it be safe for swimming and/or boating on Candlewood Lake this summer?

That is the question I asked three different sources during my investigation to find out if our summer fun on Candlewood Lake will be compromised by this hideous Coronavirus. Keep in mind, we're still one month away from the start of the boating season. The Candlewood Lake Authority explained to me:

Your best bet for gathering info on the virus and possible upcoming rules would be the local public health agencies and DEEP respectively. Stay tuned to the CLA FB page and our updates via email, but agencies are your best bet for all the new info.

Mindy and I rent a boat slip at the docks at New Fairfield Town Park; the Park and Rec department was my next stop. They informed me unless they heard from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, they were following normal protocol which means the boat docks would be ready to rock near the end of April.

My next call was to Phil, the owner of Chatterton Marina where our pontoon is stored during the offseason and he had good news. They're in the process of re-commissioning all the stored boats for the 2020 boating season, and once the Town Park docks are in and functional, we can expect to see our pontoon parked in our slip. Here's what I found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website:

There is no evidence showing anyone has gotten Covid-19 through drinking water, recreational water, or wastewater. The risk of Covid-19 through water is expected to be low.

After examining all the research I could find about how Covid-19 might affect watersports during the summer of 2020, I came to these conclusions:

  • Whether you're in a boat and/or swimming in Candlewood Lake, it can't be stressed enough that 6-feet-apart social distancing needs to be practiced at all times.
  • With Covid-19 statistics evolving on a daily basis, recommendations to protect yourself and others may change as well. To check out the latest factual information on the pandemic, visit the CDC and DEEP websites on a daily basis.
  • As far as activity on Candlewood Lake goes, my sources tell me that it's business as usual until they hear from the CDC and/or DEEP telling them differently.
