A beloved and dedicated Danbury Elementary schoolteacher is suffering from ALS, and needs help as she battles the disease at home. Laurena McCarthy's niece has started a GoFundMe campaign for her aunt, who has taught in Danbury schools for the past 20 years. In addition to being a teacher she's a wife, and mom of three sons: Justin, Brandon, and Max.

Laurena was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease, about a year ago according to the GoFundMe page dedicated to helping raise funds to modify her home, so she can remain in it while battling the illness.

In a short time, Laurena McCarthy has suffered through the progression of this disease, and this campaign will help her become more comfortable at home. According to the Danbury Patch, she taught children right up to the time of her diagnosis.

Her niece Kristin Lynn spoke warmly about her years of teaching:

Laurena's passion has always been to nurture a child's natural curiosities and encourage them to believe in themselves regardless of their circumstances, just as she believed in them.

You can tell by looking at the comments on the GoFundMe page that Laurena is loved by so many in the community. Funds raised will help purchase medical equipment like a special wheelchair as well as a voice machine for her.
