According to the News Times, Bethel Selectman will vote next week on an atheist sign that would read "This season, no matter what you celebrate or why, Happy Holidays! — your atheist neighbors." They want to put the sign next to the town's nativity scene. The American Atheists Legal Center had previously requested that the approval of the nativity scene be rescinded.

Monday night, Bethel selectman laid out town guidelines for what is acceptable in the town square, but stopped short of voting on the atheist sign for now. Uncertainty on the size of the sign prevented the vote according to the article.

When first Selectman Matt Knickerbocker described the proposed atheist sign, residents in the packed room gasped and groaned, according to the article.

Let me fast forward and just tell you how this will play out: There are lawyers involved, and based on some of the quotes from them in the article, the atheist sign will be allowed. Then, you have a nativity scene right next to an atheist sign during the holidays, in the middle of town. What could go wrong?

An atheist is a person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or gods. If this is supposed to be the case then any symbol or symbols associated with said God or Gods should be meaningless to the atheist. Right? If these symbols are theoretically meaningless to you, why does it bother you?
