Watch out, peeps, there's yet another new way for scammers to grab your hard earned money.

Boy oh boy, do you have to be alert constantly about scams or what? We're all familiar with the ever-popular IRS phone scams, and the email messages about your family member being stuck and needing cash wired immediately. Even though these have been around for quite awhile, people still fall for them.

The newest scam to share with you all is sort of a tricky one, because the two agencies in question are actually involved in a multi-million dollar settlement that does involve refunds to consumers, so you really have to beware.

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection recently issued this press release:

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) informed consumers today that some people have received emails claiming to be from Maureen Ohlhausen, Acting Chairman of the FTC – but it’s a scam. The email asks you to supply your bank account information so you can get money from the government’s settlement with Western Union.

So here's the deal. Turns out that the FTC is is involved in a multi-million dollar settlement with Western Union, but, and it's a BIG but, the refund process hasn't started yet. So obviously, if you get an email asking for your bank account info in order to receive your settlement money, it's a SCAM!

When I came across this new scam information to share with you, I did a little digging to give you some websites at your finger tips to keep you as protected as possible. A great one is smartconsumer.ct.gov, which has links to common scams, a Consumer Complaint Center, and more.

You know scammers are always looking for a way to cheat you out of money. Any chance to be forewarned and armed with tools to protect yourself is key to holding on to your money and staying safe.
