Connecticut Olympian Injured, But Walks Away After Brutal Crash
If you were watching the luge competition, you were probably among the millions around the world who gasped when the American Olympian from Connecticut, 24-year-old Emily Sweeney, crashed during the medal round.
An article published by NBCConnecticut.com states that Sweeney, from Suffield, CT, started to skid and lost control. She slid along the sides of the competition track before falling off of her sled. Olympic spectators watched on in fearful silence as medical technicians rushed to the track and tended to Sweeney for seven minutes before she was able to get up and walk off on her own.
Sweeney says that she is sore and will have X-rays to determine the extent of her injuries but it seems that she was quite lucky. As you can imagine, Luge is a very dangerous sport. The icy event claimed the life of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili who crashed while training for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games.
