I love the restaurant week concept, when a bunch of local restaurants band together and offer special discounted items or prix fixe meals. There aren't a lot of towns in Western Connecticut that can put on a worthwhile event, but Southbury can.

I've always loved Southbury's restaurant landscape, it's as diverse as our big cities, like Danbury and Waterbury, and there's no overabundance - like 5 Mexican places, and 7 pizza joints. Another thing I like about Southbury is that they've kept most of the national chain restaurants out - besides McDonald's and Panera, of course. While it is nice that there's a couple of those choices, the better benefit is better, healthier choices, and most of Southbury's restaurants are locally-owned and operated.

Southbury Restaurant Week 2023 kicks off this Saturday, February 4, and it runs till next Saturday, February 11. I took a look through the participating restaurants and found quite a few places that I have highly recommended. Overall, most of them are offering a 10% discount off of your entire purchase, and reservations are not required at a majority either. Some offers are better than others, in my opinion, they are not all the same.

The first one on the list that caught my attention is a place that's capturing all of Connecticut's diner fans' attention at the moment - Laurel Diner on Main St. S. Laurel Diner was just recently named The Best Diner in Connecticut by Food & Wine magazine. Laurel Diner is running a simple special for Southbury Restaurant Week - A breakfast sandwich and a coffee for $5, and damn, do they make a great bacon, egg, and cheese.

Out of the prix fixe offerings, I like the three course meal that The Rathskeller Restaurant, also on Main St. S.,  is offering for $27 a person. It's your choice of soup or salad, your choice of 6 entrees, and your choice between 3 different desserts.

That's where I'm going, but there are over 20+ restaurants participating. Lovers, it's a good time to get your Valentine's Day meal in Southbury.
