A Visit to the Ghost of Stop & Shop in Downtown Torrington
You may have heard that Torrington had some troubles with rats in the downtown area recently after quite a few old buildings have been torn down. I took a ride through today and didn't see rats, but my God, there are more parking spots than ever.
Just over three months ago Stop & Shop announced the permanent closure of five of their grocery stores in Connecticut. The High Street Stop & Shop in downtown Torrington shut down forever on Halloween 2024, and I haven't visited one since. I'm a bit salty, this location was the closest grocery store to my home, and although the store: 'Underperformed', smelled strongly of fish in the soda aisle, and hadn't been renovated since the 80's, it was convenient.
Today? Four businesses - TD Bank, Moon Star Chinese, Vientiene Thai, and Hibachi Express are hanging on. The good news? Hundreds of open parking spaces are waiting for you here. The wind chill was 5 degrees when I took these photos today, and I was expecting to find the plaza had turned into Torrington Towers overspill parking, but I had it almost to myself, not a rat in sight.
Maybe in there? Add this building to the teardown list. The former JC Penney building and the old Lumber Liquidators building are in much better shape.
Standing in an empty plaza on a Wednesday afternoon in the downtown area of a city of 35,000+ in Connecticut is the cost of closing one grocery store. Take nothing for granted in 2025.
