5 Places In Greater Danbury To Watch The Kentucky Derby

The 145th running of the Kentucky Derby is this Saturday (May 4.) It has long been a social phenomenon where people that usually have no interest in horse racing drop everything to catch the race. There's usually some kind of cool backstory to one or more of the horses or jockeys, and, oh yeah, that whole "wear a big hat and have a mint julep" thing. It's a fun time.

I did a little research on who in town was having a Kentucky Derby party, and these stood out for me as good places to go to watch the Run for the Roses.

1) Two Steps Downtown Grille, Ives Street, Danbury

Two Steps is hosting a "hats and horses" party with a best hat contest, raffles and more. It's also a fundraiser both celebrating and helping to fund CityCenter Danbury's downtown events.

2) TK's American Cafe, White Street, Danbury

TK's is one of the go-to's for any sporting event, and the Derby is no exception. They'll be showing the Derby as well as the NYCFC soccer match, so you can OD on sports (and wings, naturally.)

3) Greater Danbury Irish Cultural Center, Lake Avenue, Danbury

The GDICC does the Derby up bigtime, I know from experience. They're also encouraging you to wear your fanciest hat. Mint juleps will abound, as well as Derby-inspired food specials. You don't need to be a member to attend, just sign the book.

4) 189 Sports Cafe, Federal Road, Brookfield

189 is promising "the best mint julep you'll find." They'll also be serving up a variety of Kentucky bourbons, and pouring Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout on tap. They've got special glassware giveaways going too.

5) O'Connor's Public House, Federal Road, Brookfield

O'Connor's features mint juleps for the race, as well as specialty cocktails like "Tito's Finish Line" and "Kentucky Mule" plus giveaways and a best hat contest.
