Entrovirus EV-D68 is a virus that we've heard a lot about from distant states in the past month or so. It resulted in the hospitalization of hundreds of kids four years ago, and now it looks to be heading our way with 39 cases surfacing most recently in New York State, according to New York Upstate

EV-D68 can cause mild to severe respiratory illness, or no symptoms at all. EV-D68 infection most commonly results in mild symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, cough, body aches and muscle aches. Severe symptoms, while less common, may include wheezing and difficulty breathing. In some rare instances, the virus can cause acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), a serious condition that causes weakness in the arms or legs.

They warn us that infants, children, and teens are the most susceptible to this virus. To prevent the spread of the virus, and keep children healthy, the Department of Health recommends we take the same precautions that we would use to prevent the common cold; wash hands, avoid others that are sick, and sanitize surfaces.
