Many toys are called, but few are chosen. Just think of all the toys you had and played with over the years, most just didn't have what it takes to make it into the National Toy Hall of Fame. This year, three finally got the call.

The toys that are to be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame later this Fall are as follows:

  • Uno
  • Pinball
  • The Magic 8-Ball.

Those three definitely deserve it, right? I mean, how many amazing memories have those specific toys and games been responsible for?

The other toys that were nominated for this year's class, but didn't make it into the hall are as follows:

  • American Girl Dolls
  • Chalk
  • Chutes and Ladders
  • Masters of the Universe action figures
  • The Sled
  • Tic-Tac-Toe
  • Tickle Me Elmo
  • Electric Football
  • The Fisher-Price Corn Popper.

Both the Uno Cards and the Magic 8 Ball were nominated last year, so it looks like the second time was a charm for those two.

The Hall was established in 1998 in Rochester, New York, and recognizes toys that have inspired creative play and enjoyed popularity over a sustained period. Thanks to museumofplay.org, here's a little history about each of this year's inductees:

Uno: The game was actually created Merle Robbins, who was a barbershop owner from Ohio. He came up with the game while playing cards with his family. When they realized the game was kind of fun, Merle produced 5,000 decks and went around the country pitching it to different companies. Finally, one manufacturer bought the rights, and UNO was born. The game is now owned by Mattel.

Pinball: To find out the origins of pinball, you have to go all the way back to the 18th century and a French game called bagatelle. The more modern coin-operated pinball machines that we all know date back to 1931. Many new features sprung up over the years. When flippers were added, it transitioned the game from a game of chance to a game of skill.

Magic 8-Ball: The very first Magic 8-Ball was introduced in 1946, and promised to be able to tell your fortune. There are 20 answers on the cubes inside the ball, and when you shake it, one of the answers is revealed on the bottom window of the ball. During the 1960s, the toy gained national attention as an icon of pop culture, making an appearance on The Dick Van Dyke Show. It would also show up later on hit shows like Friends, and The Simpsons.
