Skimmers Discovered at Multiple Big Y Markets in Massachusetts

I just received a security notice from my primary grocery store, Big Y, notifying us customers here in Connecticut to be wary of card skimmers. Big Y has discovered a string of incidents where an unknown individual inserted credit card skimming devices at numerous locations around Massachusetts, mostly in the greater Springfield area.

According to a security notice posted on February 16, 2024 on bigy.com, between December 19 and December 21, 2023, credit/debit-card skimming devices were inserted onto single terminals at each of the following Big Y locations in Massachusetts:

Chicopee
Milford
Ludlow
Wilbraham
St. James
Northampton
Ware
Southbridge
Worcester
Springfield

Big Y also disclosed that they discovered a skimming device at their Westfield, Massachusetts location that was able to escape detection for weeks, from December 19, 2023 to January 12, 2023.

According to Forbes.com, a skimmer is a device installed on card readers that collects user card numbers, which thieves then use to make fraudulent purchases. thieves could also install a tiny camera near the card reader in order to capture PIN entry. We're all used to the warning signs put up at gas stations alerting us to cover our PIN pan as we're entering it, but fraud is everywhere.

Big Y has inspected all of their terminals since the discovery, and will continue to do so. The company has also pledged to promptly notify their customers if they learn that any particular customer's information was compromised, and will provide them with additional information.
