If you read my recent article about a Connecticut restaurant's fried clams being named as one of the best in the world, thank you, and thank you for your continued love of fried clams as I walk down memory lane with you. Do you remember the incredible fried clams that The Rusty Scupper used to serve?

Mrs. Large and I took a ride down to New Haven to get some inspiration from IKEA, and some churros from the food trucks on Long Wharf Drive. I noticed that our beloved Lenny & Joes/Leon's/Rusty Scupper building at 501 Long Wharf Drive is now known as IL Gabbiano, and they serve an Italian/seafood/steak menu. But something that I enjoyed eating at 501 Long Wharf Drive in New Haven since 1992 is not available there anymore - Fried Clams.

I started working in New Haven in August 1992 as a traffic reporter at Roadwatch Traffic, and our office was located right next to the Rusty Scupper in New Haven's Maritime Center Building. I worked a split shift from 5:30-9AM, and then 2:30 to 6:30PM. Most days I would go kill the day by lazily stuffing my face at Rusty Scupper for 2-3 hours. Their fried clams were incredible, and I'll never forget the huge pile of steamers that they served during the Summertime. Captain's Galley in West Haven beat Rusty Scupper in portion sizes, but Rusty Scupper had the better fried clams.

Lenny & Joe's and fried clams retreated from Long Wharf Drive in 2020. Here's a suggestion for one of the food truck operators - fried clams - Summer 2024.
